This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "1970s Throw Pillows" and here is my entry, "Dreamscape"! OF COURSE I couldn't resist trying out this design in a bunch of other colourways too (see below), but I did end up entering the first Coral Orange version. I've entered my "Corfu" design in this week's Spoonflower "Cheerful Checks" Design Challenge! This design and it's colour combination were inspired by a trip I took a long time ago to that Greek island!  I've entered my "Good Vibrations" design in this week's Spoonflower "Reworked Classics" Design Challenge! The idea behind this Challenge was to reimagine classic patterns, such as dots, checkers, plaids and...STRIPES! And of course, this design really needed some Groovy Retro Colours! Find this one (together with LOTS of other colourways) in my "Good Vibrations" Collection in my Spoonflower Shop. I had to make a new Collection because I went down the colour rabbit hole AGAIN and added it in LOTS of different colourways (and sizes)! If you would like to VOTE in this Challenge, click HERE! 
This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Petal Solids Coordinates: In Bloom". Spoonflower has asked for designs that use 1, 2 or 3 of the requested colours which this week are "Coral", "Grass" and "Peony" (these limited colour palette challenges are amongst my favourites to enter)! Designers can use additional colours, but SF recommends not more than 4 colors total (not including Black and White) to ensure the designs coordinate well with their Petal Signature Cotton Solids. I initially was pretty happy to see this week's 3 bright colours (it made me think of jelly beans for some reason)...UNTIL I tried to design with all 3 colours together. For some reason, it just wasn't working! So I decided to Divide and Conquer: I paired each colour with another colour to create 3 separate colourways of my "Jelly Beans" design, trying to make sure all 3 would Mix & Match too. And here they are: 1. CORAL on Purple 2. GRASS on Citron Yellow 3. PEONY on Blue Which one would you have entered? After going back and forth a bunch of times, I decided on #1: Coral on Purple. I just love the "neon-ness" of it! Aside from co-ordinating with the cotton fabrics, it sure would make some crazy wallpaper! Voting opens today Thursday April 14! The latest Issue #51 of Uppercase Magazine, one of my favourite art publications, just arrived! This Issue is all about QUILTS, yay! Happily, my "Corfu" design was included in the Illustrated Quilts section that features art inspired by quilts "real, remembered and imagined". A bit about this design: "Corfu" is one of the patchwork-inspired patterns in my "Pieces of Dreams" Collection, inspired by a stop I made on that Greek island during a years-long, around-the-world trip I took many years ago...Memories!
This "Corfu" design is available in my SHOP on absolutely gorgeous, light and delicate silk scarves in several sizes! Have a LOOK HERE!  Here is my entry for this week's Spoonflower "Ice Crystals" Design Challenge and I find it so calming for some reason! This reminds me of the Khumbu Icefall on the way up to the summit of Mt. Everest. And NO, I've not seen it in person, just pictures and that fantastic IMAX movie "Everest" by MacGilivray Freeman (which I've probably watched about 7 times). But I did trek in the Himalayas many years ago... This design is now available in my Spoonflower Shop in 3 sizes on fabrics, wallpaper and home decor!
Here is my entry for this week's Spoonflower "Neutral Geometric Wallpaper" Design Challenge (voting closes Tuesday Aug 24 2021)! And yes, this is about as "neutral" as I get...After all, there is beige, cream and navy in there! Navy is a neutral, right?! This "Sunrise" design is now available in my Spoonflower Shop in 3 sizes AND in 2 completely different colourways (check both out below) on fabric, wallpaper and home decor! This Week's Spoonflower "World Waterways" Design Challenge in Partnership with Red Paddle Co.!6/3/2021 For this week's "World Waterways" Design Challenge, Spoonflower has partnered with Red Paddle Co., the world's leading stand-up paddle board brand. They are asking designers to create a non-directional repeat pattern using up to 4 colours (I used 3) to celebrate World Ocean Day and the world's waterways that paddle boarders have grown to love. Not only will the chosen design, hand-picked by Red Paddle Co, be licensed and featured on a Limited-Edition SUP, BUT the winner will also get a SUP with their design. In one word...Eeeee! So here is my "For the Love of Water" design featuring abstracted water currents. I wanted it to be a bit ambiguous (is it water flowing around rocks in rivers, or maybe a bird's-eye view of water around islands?) to celebrate the wide variety of waterways that paddle boarders travel. This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Home On The Range" so I decided to enter my "Joshua Tree" desert pattern design in brand new colours! This particular design makes me think back to a fantastic and crazy trip we had in Joshua Tree National Park many years ago... This one coordinates with other designs in my "Retro Rattlers" Collection so there are lots of ways to mix & match! I first discovered the ANKH, the Egyptian hieroglyph meaning "life" on a months-long trip to Egypt many years ago while visiting tombs, the Great Pyramids and the Temples of Luxor, Karnak and Abu Simbel amongst many others. Because ancient Egyptians believed that one's life on Earth is just a part of eternal life, the ANKH hieroglyph has come to also symbolize "Everlasting Life". It was because of this meaning and my love of Egypt, that I decided to get this symbol as my only tattoo (so far). So when I saw that this week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Talismans", I immediately knew that the Ankh would be the one I would use for my design. Here is my entry, coloured to emulate ancient scrolls! It's now available on fabric, wallpaper and home decor in my Spoonflower Shop! And check out the entries at the Voting Page!  
Some of the ideas I've been playing with for a new collection I've been working on recently: unique colour combos, mix & match patchwork and pure abstraction and geometry! Although I'm working on another project (more about that soon!) that includes this new "Capri" pattern design, I thought it would also be perfect to enter in this week's Spoonflower "Create Room" Design Challenge which says: "The pattern you create should not only provide visual joy, but should inspire both you and others to create more", to use as a wallpaper backdrop in a DreamBox, an all-in-one craft room that folds away into a beautiful armoire, designed by Create Room. What do you think, does this design fit the challenge? In any event, I think it makes for a pretty cool bathroom! Check out the Voting Page!   I wasn't going to enter a design in this week's Spoonflower "ABCs of...Tea Towel" Design Challenge, but then I changed my mind when I came up with the idea for this "Geometric ABCs" design. It was a bit of a rush but I managed to finish it on time! I’ve just entered my new “Retro Rattlers” design in this week’s Spoonflower “Brightly-Colored Reptiles” Design Challenge! This is something a little different for me...OR is it? What do you think, does this design still look like my work? I’m very curious to hear what you think. I am very much liking this graphic “look” and I find my work is always a bit of a tug-of-war between clean, graphic shapes and a more hand-drawn style. Not sure if others see that too??
