Even though I've just added my new "Bug's Life" repeat pattern design to my Spoonflower Shop, it actually has a very LOOONG history! The individual bugs are amongst my earliest designs created when I was very new to surface design. I originally sold them individually as Greeting Cards and Art Prints at various craft fairs and in my (now closed) Etsy shop. Then I revised and re-coloured them, and now sell them as Graphic Tees in my TeePublic Shop (check out my "Creature Features" Album there to see them, called "Retro Bugs")!
AND THEN...I put them all together into one design to make this repeat pattern! They're now available in all 4 colours in Small-, Medium- and Large-Scale versions on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor! I guess I've never really been able to completely archive these colourful bugs over the years and always seem to return to them. And funny enough, for this repeat design, I went all the way back to those very first, original colours! I thought this design would be perfect to enter in this week's Spoonflower "Flash Tattoo Sheets" Design Challenge (I entered the first version on Hot Pink) because the strong outlines and colours would make some pretty darn cool tattoos IMHO! Public Voting for this Challenge opens today Thursday Nov 3, and closes next Tuesday Nov 8 at 3:00 ET! Check out the Voting Page to see this week's entries! Here is a portrait of Kenny G shot by amazing photographer Chris Chapman at the Deadline Studio at last years TIFF 2021 with my “Folk Flutter” design in the background (printed by Spoonflower)! Read on for what Chris says about this collaboration (as quoted from his Jan 25 2022 Instagram Post @ccphotophoto)... . With THANKS to Chris Chapman Photography and Spoonflower for the rush printing! . If you love this design, check it out in my Spoonflower Shop HERE. Photographer Chris Chapman says: "Here’s an unpublished portrait I shot of #smoothjazz phenomenon @kennyg at the @deadline studio during last year’s tiff. Love him or hate him , the man is a bonafide success story…one of his albums is the highest selling instrumental album of all time , and his total worldwide sales are 75 million and rising ….a remarkable accomplishment for an instrumentalist. He was in town to promote the @hbomax documentary #listeningtokennyg from director #PennyLane. From Wikipedia :
“In 2021, HBO Max started streaming director Penny Lane's documentary Listening to Kenny G, with the subject of the film not having had any control over its content. Lane stated she chose Kenny Gorelick as her subject because he is "a musician who is objectively popular, by way of record sales, but is also hated by the 'critical class'."Richard Brody, in a New Yorker report, cited Kenny G in the film responding "cheerful[ly]" to a question about what he loves about music, with, "I don’t know if I love music that much," and continuing, "when I listen to music, I think about the musicians and I just think about what it takes to make that music and how much they had to practice." I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet , but it’s def on my list for 2022. Either way , the man himself was extremely cordial and a pleasure to meet and photograph . He expressed to me how much he personally liked this shot , which is something you always hope to hear from your subject . No doubt , the whimsical background with its rich colors and graphic style ( from the super talented Jackie Tahara’s @unblinkstudio and her production collaborator @spoonflower ) are what makes this pic so special …i felt like it was a good fit, evoking a kind of musical playfulness, and made his electric blue suit pop . Shout out to @klaus_on_king for lending me the stool Mr.Gorelick is perched on. #tiff21 #deadlinehollywood #kennyg #hbomax #unblinkstudio #spoonflower #klausonking #tifftuesday ©️Chris Chapman" **Photo courtesy of Chris Chapman Photography and @deadline. I feel like I’ve been posting about my new “Modern Chintz” pattern design a bit much lately but I’ve just entered it in this week’s Spoonflower Design Challenge which just so happens to be “Chintz”! So thought I would let you know. On one hand, this design started with all those old-fashioned floral chintz patterns you've seen so much of (and which I love), but the way I drew the motifs and the fun colours are definitely more of today! If you would like to check out all the gorgeous designs, you can link to the Voting Page here (voting ends Nov 12)!
My son saw my brand new butterfly pattern and said it was "trippy"! What do you think, is it trippy? Maybe not trippy enough??! I think I will call this one "Free Spirits", a nod to the free-spirited optimism of the psychedelic 60s! Let me know what you think! This design is now available to license and if you are interested to license it for your products, just contact me!
