Here goes a long story...So this week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Mosses". I think I spent about 2 days trying to come up with ideas for this one (close-up botanicals? moss-covered rocks in Zen gardens? mossy hillsides? abstracted leaves? ETC). I sketched pages of leafy motifs, squinting at closeup pics of all kinds of different mosses. Pretty hard to do on a computer or leafing through my garden books. So I went out into my garden to have a look. But I just wasn't feeling it...I finally decided I liked the close-up spiky leaves of Haircap Moss and sketched those a bunch. Then I thought about how they look from above (check out #haircapmoss and you'll see what I mean), and then kept repeating those, simplifying, repeating, simplifying...Until I came up with this geometric which has very stylized spiky Haircap Moss leaves as seen from above! Just wanted to explain so you can see that something that looks rather "simple", can sometimes take FOREVER...At least the COLOUR choice was really QUICK! If you would like to vote, you can link to the Voting Page HERE. Public voting opens today and closes Tuesday Feb 21! AND if you'd like to see this design in my Spoonflower Shop, click the images below! OF COURSE, I couldn't resist. I also added my "Haircap Moss" design to my Society6 Shop too so it is available on even more products, including Wall Art!

For This Week's Spoonflower "Room-Specific Wallpaper" Design Challenge I Chose the Boudoir!2/8/2023 This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Room-Specific Wallpaper" and the idea was "to choose a room and create the perfect wallpaper" for it! How could I even resist...I chose a Boudoir (or Dressing Room, but I like the sound of "Boudoir" better), and created this Fuchsia Pink and Lavender Purple design. It's called "Glamour"!
Public voting for this Challenge opens tomorrow Thursday Feb 9 and closes Tuesday Feb 14 (Valentine's Day, which suits this design I think!) You can link to the Voting Page HERE if you'd like to see all the entries! . This new floral pattern is available in my Spoonflower Shop on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor in 3 sizes. Imagine it in VELVET! . EDITOR NOTE: I originally named this design "Boudoir", but that seems to have some "naughty" connotations, so I changed it to "Glamour" after the Challenge closed because it kept getting flagged in various uploads and searches. Go figure! Apparently all parts of the charming Lily of the Valley plant are potentially toxic, and contain compounds which can inhibit the heart's ability to pump if ingested. It's rated a 1 on the Toxicity Scale (because ingesting it can cause serious illness or death) and a 4 (because its juice can cause a skin rash). I didn't know this until I started researching "Poisonous Plants" for this week's Spoonflower Design Challenge (voting opens Jan 12 and closes Tuesday Jan 17)! Here's my entry: "Lily of the Valley" in Spring Green! You can link to the Voting Page HERE!
If you'd like to see this design in my Spoonflower Shop, click HERE. It comes in 4 scales on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor (this links to the Small-Scale version)! If you haven’t heard already, the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year is “Viva Magenta”, described as “a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative”. When Pantone announced their colour choice, I immediately started experimenting with this colour and the Pantone “Inspire” colour palette. See some of the results below, and check out more in my “Viva Magenta Collection”!
All of these pattern designs are now available in my Spoonflower Shop on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor! AND I entered my "Hana-Dark" Japanese-inspired design (first pic) in the Spoonflower "Viva Magenta" Design Challenge! I was a bit distracted over the holidays so I forgot to post about this Challenge earlier, but you can still vote until tomorrow January 3 2023! Even though I've just added my new "Bug's Life" repeat pattern design to my Spoonflower Shop, it actually has a very LOOONG history! The individual bugs are amongst my earliest designs created when I was very new to surface design. I originally sold them individually as Greeting Cards and Art Prints at various craft fairs and in my (now closed) Etsy shop. Then I revised and re-coloured them, and now sell them as Graphic Tees in my TeePublic Shop (check out my "Creature Features" Album there to see them, called "Retro Bugs")!
AND THEN...I put them all together into one design to make this repeat pattern! They're now available in all 4 colours in Small-, Medium- and Large-Scale versions on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor! I guess I've never really been able to completely archive these colourful bugs over the years and always seem to return to them. And funny enough, for this repeat design, I went all the way back to those very first, original colours! I thought this design would be perfect to enter in this week's Spoonflower "Flash Tattoo Sheets" Design Challenge (I entered the first version on Hot Pink) because the strong outlines and colours would make some pretty darn cool tattoos IMHO! Public Voting for this Challenge opens today Thursday Nov 3, and closes next Tuesday Nov 8 at 3:00 ET! Check out the Voting Page to see this week's entries! Click the images to see the Medium-Scale versions in my Spoonflower Shop! When I travel to other places, I love going to markets where it's so interesting to explore all the unfamiliar things, particularly food, and especially fruits and veggies I have never seen or tasted before. So when I saw that this week's Spoonflower Design Challenge was "Otherworldly Botanicals", I immediately thought about strange fantastical fruits as a subject matter. So here is my new "Ambrosia" pattern design which I filled with graphic melon-like fruits on curly vines (of course, it HAD to have curly vines!) Voting for this Challenge is now open and you can link to the Voting Page HERE. I would love your vote for this one (voting closes Tuesday Sept 20)! This design is also now available in my Spoonflower Shop on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor in 3 sizes, and you can SHOP this design HERE (in the Medium-Scale, it's also available in a Small- and Large-Scale too!) And of course, I couldn't resist adding this design to my Spoonflower Shop in some other colourways too, see below! Each colourway also comes in 3 sizes. Click on an image to link to the Medium-Scale versions directly in my Spoonflower Shop!
This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Retro Floral Curtains" and I've entered my new floral "Danube" design in a gorgeous Royal Blue! My retro idea was to use all those bright and groovy 60s colour combos that I love: Blue with Turquoise, and Pink with Red, and Purple for good measure! If you'd like to vote, check out the Voting Page! And BTW: this design is available in my Spoonflower Shop in 3 sizes and in other colours too (scroll to the bottom to see)! And you can SHOP this design HERE! Duvet cover, pillows and curtains shown below are Large-Scale! Wallpaper shown below is Medium-Scale! My "Danube" floral pattern design is also available in my Spoonflower Shop in Ecru (left) and Moss Green (right) in Small-, Medium- and Large-Scale versions too!
This Week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Space Exploration"! Here is my Entry: "Blast Off!"8/4/2022 “BLAST OFF!” This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is: "Space Exploration"! Here is my entry and believe me, I had real difficulty with this theme, from coming up with ideas to creating a design that I liked! Anyway, you get to see the final result here, and not all the hair-pulling that went into this one! Voting for this Challenge opens today Thursday August 4 and I would love your vote for this one! Public voting closes Tuesday August 9. You can check out all the entries at the Voting Page! If you would like to SHOP this design in my Spoonflower Shop, you can do so HERE. And take note that it does come in Small-, Medium- and Large-Scale sizes too! And Read All About the Design Process Behind "Blast Off!" If you would like to read about my design process and how MY "Blast Off!" design came to be, I invite you to read my most recent NEWSLETTER (August 2022) where I describe how hard this one was! If you are interested, you can Subscribe to my Newsletter too! I've entered my "Jaipur" floral pattern design in this week's Spoonflower "Monochrome Moments" Design Challenge! The idea behind this challenge was to choose a "Base Colour" and create a design using only Tints (colour + white), Shades (colour + black) or Tones (colour + gray) of that colour! At first, I had some consternation...How could I create a design using only ONE colour?! But I ended up choosing this beautiful Scarlet Red for the challenge (and I couldn't resist adding this design to my Spoonflower Shop in some other colours too!) If you did this challenge, which Base Colour would you choose (you have to choose just one)?! Check out the Voting Page to see all the entries! . AND If you are interested, Spoonflower is offering 25% OFF All WALLPAPER Rolls until Sunday July 10 2022! You can link to my BEST SELLERS directly HERE! Wallpaper pictured above is the "Large-Scale" version of this design! It also comes in a Small- and Medium-Scale version too!
This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Vintage Nostalgia Wallpaper" so I decided to enter my "Orangerie" design in this Avocado Green and Burnt Orange colourway. Although I've created this design in a bunch of other colourways, I have a sentimental attachment to this one because I grew up in a house with a kitchen in these colours! We even had Avocado Green appliances and wall-to-wall carpeting in various shades of Avocado Green (if I knew then what I know now, I would have taken pics of that carpet)! But then my parents renovated the kitchen, and to me it ended up being much less interesting (they also repainted the garage door and window shutters from Bright Turquoise to Dark Brown, and although I do like a good Brown, I never forgave them)! If you would like to Vote, you can link to the Voting Page HERE (and I would greatly appreciate your vote for this one!)
. With thanks to @theindoorsyproject for this mock-up! I've entered my "Good Vibrations" design in this week's Spoonflower "Reworked Classics" Design Challenge! The idea behind this Challenge was to reimagine classic patterns, such as dots, checkers, plaids and...STRIPES! And of course, this design really needed some Groovy Retro Colours! Find this one (together with LOTS of other colourways) in my "Good Vibrations" Collection in my Spoonflower Shop. I had to make a new Collection because I went down the colour rabbit hole AGAIN and added it in LOTS of different colourways (and sizes)!
If you would like to VOTE in this Challenge, click HERE! Colouring books are something that both Adults and Kids love! So I thought it would be a good design concept for this week's Spoonflower Design Challenge theme: "Home Hobbies". Wouldn't it be fun to get this design on Fabric, Wallpaper (especially Wallpaper!) or Home Decor and just start colouring in?! And I'm feeling the urge...I might have to add a colour version of this one too! Voting for this Challenge opens THURSDAY MAY 5 Link to the Spoonflower Design Challenge Page HERE!
Some of you may have seen my "Sea Stars" pattern design recently in different colours, but here is the version I created specifically to enter in this week's Spoonflower "Petal Solids Coordinates: Pastel Comforts" Design Challenge! The challenge was to use 1, 2 or all 3 of the given colours (Honeydew, Lilac and Sky Blue, with Black and White optional) in a design. I ended up using a light turquoise instead of Honeydew (which is allowed)! It wasn't the easiest combo, but I hope you all like it!
You can check out all the entries at the Voting Page AND DON'T FORGET: Everything in my Spoonflower Shop is 20% OFF until Sunday May 1! This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Petal Solids Coordinates: In Bloom". Spoonflower has asked for designs that use 1, 2 or 3 of the requested colours which this week are "Coral", "Grass" and "Peony" (these limited colour palette challenges are amongst my favourites to enter)! Designers can use additional colours, but SF recommends not more than 4 colors total (not including Black and White) to ensure the designs coordinate well with their Petal Signature Cotton Solids. I initially was pretty happy to see this week's 3 bright colours (it made me think of jelly beans for some reason)...UNTIL I tried to design with all 3 colours together. For some reason, it just wasn't working! So I decided to Divide and Conquer: I paired each colour with another colour to create 3 separate colourways of my "Jelly Beans" design, trying to make sure all 3 would Mix & Match too. And here they are:
1. CORAL on Purple 2. GRASS on Citron Yellow 3. PEONY on Blue Which one would you have entered? After going back and forth a bunch of times, I decided on #1: Coral on Purple. I just love the "neon-ness" of it! Aside from co-ordinating with the cotton fabrics, it sure would make some crazy wallpaper! Voting opens today Thursday April 14! You can check out all the entries and vote at the Voting Page AND you can also check out my Spoonflower Shop too! All these colourways and more are available in my Spoonflower Shop on Fabrics, Wallpaper and Home Decor in 3 sizes! This week's Spoonflower Design Challenge is "Garden Party" and I had a really hard time trying to decide which design to enter. But I finally decided on my "Fresh-Picked" design because it has Fresh Veggies in Rainbow Colours! That just says GARDEN PARTY to me! Voting for this challenge is now open until Tuesday April 12! Check out the Voting Page to see all the entries. And click HERE to see this design in my Spoonflower Shop! **ADDENDUM: My "Fresh-Picked" design placed 24th (out of a whopping 1148 entries!) in the Spoonflower "Garden Party" Design Challenge! See all the winners HERE! With thanks to The Indoorsy Project for this picnic mockup!
